Each response should be at least 75 words in length and you should attempt to answer the questions posed by your classmates. Additionally, reflect on how you and your classmates have progressed throughout the course. Also note similarities or differences you see between how you and your classmates respond to the Clugston quote now versus at the beginning of the course.

An open-ended question about literature that I would like to ask my fellow classmates in order to reflect more deeply is We have read a lot of short stories, poems, and even tragedies; which one of these literary works had a conflict that you closely identified with, and why?

By observing the manner in which a character resolves or doesn’t resolve a conflict, one can gain insight into the character’s qualities, values, and personality. There are always two sides to a conflict, which usually brings about change.  As readers, we must be aware that both sides of the conflict must be identified and understood. These conflicts include: Individual versus Individual, Individual versus Nature, Individual versus Society, Individual versus Technology, and Individual versus Self.

My initial response to the Clugston (2014) quote from Week One was I do believe the quote, “a powerful curiosity about human relationships and how to cope in the world in which we find ourselves” (Clugston 2014) is valid. I think this quote is very valid, with the way technology and literature are changing. Literature not only represents to us our world but it also shows us ways in which we can change the world or adapt to changes which have already taken place without our realization. Literature’s cognitive dimension helps us cope with the current as well as future challenges by changing the way we think about ourselves, our society and those who are excluded from or marginalized within our society.

Clugston (2014) writes that there is “a powerful curiosity about human relationships and how to cope in the world in which we find ourselves.” I still feel that this quote is valid especially after what I have learned from this course. This course has taught me that literature is as important as many other interests I have and that there are many ways to interpret literature. Regardless of how you interpret literature, the point is to analyze it to find the deeper meaning and significance of what the author is trying to portray. I have also gained insight as to how reading literature can help me gain insight on struggles within myself and others. Literature reflects the struggles and complexities society, our environment and our complex relationships. I think my reading skills have become more advanced as I have learned about literary techniques and tool. This has taught me how to understand better and analyze literature; ultimately improving my critical thinking skills. Finally, along with my reading skills, I believe my writing and communication skills have improved as well.
