BEYOND THE LIGHTS FORUM TOPIC
Answer any of the following questions in your post on Beyond the Lights, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Nate Parker and Minnie Driver, and include specific examples from the film.
These questions relate to material found in Chapter 11 of your textbook on Filmmaking Technologies and Production Systems, Marketing and Distribution.
An interesting way to gain insight into the production of an independent movie is to examine its financing, particularly the nature and investment of each producer and/or production company. This and other related information can be found in such publications as the Wall Street Journal, Variety, and the Hollywood Reporter as well as online at IMDbPro (www.pro.imdb.com). From this information, you can see the hierarchy of financial influences behind the film and pose questions about how this might have affected the movie’s content and form.
The Director, Gina Prince-Bythewood, speaks about getting her film financed, in a video clip posted in your Course Materials section of Chapter 11.
What challenges do independent filmmakers face in getting financing for their projects? Do you think being a woman or a minority poses additional challenges in the film industry? What are some creative ways that filmmakers can find financing for their projects?
How do focus groups and rating systems relate to the marketing and distribution of a movie? What other factors do producers consider in the marketing and distribution stage? Who do you think is the target audience for this film, and how was the marketing directed towards this group?
What are the three basic phases of making a movie? Describe each phase and discuss the roles of key crew members in each phase relating to this film. Do you feel the crew members were well suited for their roles? Why?
Please follow the instructions carefully and finish the work before due. Thank you.
